Since 1984 seventeen Vertues have been constructed with either strip plank or cold moulded hulls. The deck arrangement, rig and layout of the first Ocean Rambler mimicked the Vertue Mk II which was by now the most popular incarnation of the popular and revered Vertue class.
The plans set of the strip plank construction version offer a choice of three different 4 berth arrangements, a 3 berth and 2 berth options and of course that of Andrillot and Vertue XXXV. And the standard Vertue II Mk II layout is with 4 berths: 2 in the forcastle with large lockers and chain locker under. The forward cabin is totally enclosed with a full bulkhead which provides the support needed for the deck stepped mast, and there is a door to the fore cabin, unheard of on the early boats. The head; a proper ship’s toilet with holding tank, is within the forward cabin which has genuine headroom.
The latest to be built using strip plank V 235 is a contemporary replica of Vertue XXXV but updated with technology for the twenty-first century and the emphasis is on economic construction. Full size frame and bulkhead template drawings are provided in the plan package or full size templates.

Ocean Rambler was constructed using strip plank construction for which full construction, rigging and outfit drawings were be provided. The method is also suitable for amateur construction and the drawings have been updated to provide sufficient information for a keen amateur to undertake as a home project.
Hull construction is not complicated and does not require specialized tools or machinery. It comprises cedar or douglas fir planking which is glued and fastened to plywood frames and bulkheads. There are also a number of laminated floors in the keel area and the keelson and posts are from laminated hardwood. Wherever possible marine grade plywood is specified for the decks and superstructure and the whole hull structural reinforcement fits together as a strong wooden matrix, bonded with epoxy glues and covered with a thin yet strong glass skin.
