Rien Hofman ordered the plans for Vertue V 231 in May 2001 having initially ordered a set in for V 217 in September 1993, but being unable to start his project he (with Laurent Giles permission) re-assigned those drawings to an acquaintance who later built the yacht.
With V 231 Rien specified the bermudan cutter rig with a bowsprit but no boomkin – the sail plan had been drawn in 1996 specifically for V 217 and was repeated on a couple of later yachts. The revisions also included new drawings for the construction of wooden spars, the standing rigging and for the stainless steel mast iron work and bowsprit bands.
