In 1929, as Jack Laurent Giles was overseeing the construction of his first design and putting his final touches to that of Argo his fourth, Arthur Ransome a media correspondent who whilst covering the Russian Revolution and was also employed as a spy for His Majesty’s Government began work on his seminal novel Swallows & Amazons. Ransome, who had owned little ships in which to work, did not want her to be named Peter Duck which was Giles suggestion, and at first Ransome insisted just the abbreviation PD. He also was in rather a rush to take delivery, lines were drawn in November 1945 and somehow Giles managed to get the drawings out to Pin Mill for H King to start work in January 1946.
