In 1937 Laurent Giles had designed Monie for Mr Milner Deighton. Monie was an uncommonly successful design and she and her sisters established themselves as the Vertue Class – sturdy boats with splendid seagoing qualities and a first rate performance under sail for boats of their type. At Christmas 1947 Mr Deighton advanced a proposition to Laurent Giles Partner George Gill which he could not refuse. Design him a boat to have Monie’s accommodation, to be easy to handle and to be a match for the successful West Solent One Designs.
