There will be few ocean sailors’ bookshelves that do not include a volume or two by John Guzzwell. The Kiwi magazine Seaspray wrote “Everyone knows that John Guzzwell is a superb seaman but only those who have actually seen the two boats in which he has visited New Zealand can appreciate what a magnificent craftsman he also is”. The other boat was, of course, Trekka. Like Trekka, Treasure was designed specifically for owner construction and ocean cruising.
In John’s words “Treasure, designed by Laurent Giles and Partners Ltd, is a 16.5 ton displacement ocean going motorsailer which my wife Maureen and I built in our back yard over a three year period in the village of Sway, near Southampton, England”. “She is a modification of the Donella class of which eighteen have been built, both in wood and steel, and in fact Treasure is a slightly larger edition of the steel Donella hull but built in wood!”
