When Cheoy Lee ceased building wooden yachts, the prolific Vertue among them, Leslie Emmerton happened to be on a three month business trip to The Far East and it was from there that he wrote to the Partners.
Initially he was seeking a ’production’ wooden Vertue – he was not interested at all in buying second hand, but hearing that world-wide there were no builders currently producing the yacht he decided to purchase the plans and approaching some yards himself. He requested recommendations for yards who would be capable of ‘doing an excellent job of construction this type of vessel', and commented 'It also occurs to me that your firm may have had similar enquiries previously, and if that is the case it may be worth attempting to get together with two or three of these people and ask a builder to quote on building all three instead of just one, in the interest of a better price'.
But ironically in 1975 the cost of building a standard wooden Vertue in the UK by a reputable builder was in the order of £15,000 – Two years later the first production G.R.P Vertue built to Lloyds 100 A1 had a price tag 20% greater. Perhaps as a direct result of Cheoy Lees cessation of wooden boat production in 1975 alone the Giles office provided ten sets of Vertue plans for clients to build wooden Vertues.
