Tilly Twin (design 0153), and this, her sister ship Water Music were developed on the success of Jack Giles’ post Myth of Malham designs. It had been assumed, perhaps too readily by Giles that with the example of Myth the R.O.R.C. rule would be modified to give a reasonable measure of length and discourage the snubbing of the forward and aft overhangs which contributed so much to Myths low rating under the rule.
However it was not to be and the terror which the International competitors continued to inspire caused the rule makers to cling tenaciously to a measure of length which specifically held down the internationals at what ever cost and concentrated on checking the mythical breed by revised depth measurement. This approach was altogether unfortunate for Fandango (a Myth with normal ends) as she was caught both ways and had to carry a too high rating.
In the twenty years to follow development of offshore racing yacht design made very little progress, little advancements were made in hull and keel design and perhaps it wasn’t until the then relatively unknown New Zealand designer Bruce Farr arrived in the Solent for the 1975 Admirals Cup series with his 42’ Gerontius that this element of design in the sport began to move forward again.
