Following the initial success of Centaur and Pageant it was inevitable that Westerly Marine, under the Managing Directorship of David Sanders would request a larger model, and with greater variations: ketch or sloop rigs, twin or single keels and of course aft or centre cockpit arrangements, the latter offering a reasonably comfortable aft twin cabin. Hence the Westerly 31 range was born: Longbow and Berwick, and a year later Renown and Pentland (design number 0635).
Described in yachting World as ingenious design she continued the immensely successful Giles/Westerly theme of good solid spacious cruisers and the 31 was indeed big enough to provide good accommodation without becoming (by the then standards) too boxy looking. She had the weight and capacity to stay at sea for long extended passages and can be motor-sailed effectively. In the 1970’s and early 80’s there were few production yachts to equal the Westerly 31 in terms of accommodation and performance.
