In the 1949 R.O.R.C program Fandango was competing in the strongest fleet against Myth, and Fandango was Giles’s preferred design of that there is no doubt. With longer overhangs, narrower beam and deeper draft Fandango would obviously suffer a rating penalty over Myth and to compensate for this the sail plan was smaller than would be expected.
Jack Giles was for some time a member of the R.O.R.C. Technical Committee and as such he would know the rule inside out, he had anticipated a rule change to penalise ‘Myth’ Types with short overhangs. Various commentaries from the time report that Fandango was completed in a rush and in her first season did not enjoy an appropriate work up period, indeed she sailed straight from Moody’s to the Fastnet race start!
Fandango is currently to be seen exhibited at the IBTC Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and is undergoing an extensive rebuild to her original 1949 condition.
