Maid Meriel was launched in 1946 and was the first project that Giles put with Harry King’s yard at Pin Mill on the river Orwell. Nearly ten years before Maid of Malham was constructed a few miles to the southwest by King & sons yard at Burnham on Crouch, but the two yards were not connected and the latter which also built Wanderer III (design number 0164) closed in 1975.
Kings at Pin Mill presently continues to build clinker dinghies. It was they who in the same year as Maid Meriel constructed Peter Duck (design number 0054) Giles’ floating bath-chair for children’s author Arthur Ransome.
Maid Meriel has also been named Karesta Ferida, she is of the same hull form as Monie but was the last of the class built entirely to 1937 drawings prior to the introduction of the 1946 ‘revamped’ Vertue design. She currently sails from Lymington.
