The Giles 38 production fiberglass sloop was introduced in 1972, the first being constructed by A.H. Moody & Son on hull and deck mouldings by Seaglass of Arlesford. Initially the project was marketed by Laurent Giles and on the sales material the yachts were to be completed by ‘selected builders’. Later the project was also marketed by Falmouth based John Sears International who sold two sets of mouldings for owner completion and completed another of the hulls in the same hall as their Alan Pape designed Cuttyhunk 41.
Three years after the initial design Rossiter Yachts (who later built the Giles designed Ocean Goose) were commissioned to complete Running Tide of Avon (see design number 0636) – the only ketch version of the design to be constructed, but with a covered helm position and centre cockpit with spacious aft cabin. She too was on a Seaglass polyester hull moulding but with an extended transom counter increasing overall length to 39’ 9”. Running Tide was given the Giles 38 hull number G38-4 and deck & deck-works were constructed entirely of wood.
In 1976 wood was also used as the hull construction of the wooden cutter Breock (see design number 0735) and for two more Giles 38’s built in New Zealand and Australia respectively.
