Like so many owners of Laurent Giles Vertues Mr Abbott of Pacific California built his yacht himself. Following six months of discussions the designers recommended which drawings would best suit his needs and ultimately the sloop rig was selected – coach house stepped with a wooden mast. The drawing package included the increasingly popular coach roof style of the extended ocean cruising version, lead ballast beneath the traditional carvel hull.
Mr Abbott studied the drawings for some months before commencing the project in May 1977 and there was much correspondence between him and LG & P Partner Bill Matthew who at the time was managing all of the Vertue new construction projects working with Barry van Geffen in the drawing office.
Mr Abbott had originally requested the cutter rig that had been designed two years earlier for design number 0643; Vertue V159 which had been built in Spain, however during the initial lofting stage he made the change to the original masthead sloop as per Bill Matthew’s suggestion.
