Following the success of the level rater Ebblake IV in the previous season production boat builders Westerly Marine Construction took up the option to put this 24 footer into series production. Initially Westerlys offered the ‘cruising version but within a few months they added the stripped down ‘budget’ version and ‘club racing’ version.
The budget version was exactly as described – without interior and the most basic suite of sails.
This was a radical departure for Westerlys who had by then established an unrivalled worldwide reputation for their sturdy stable Laurent Giles designed cruisers: Centaur, Pageant, Longbow and the Conway collection.
Between 1975 and 1981 three hundred and twenty GK 24s were built in all. The new design was developed from Ebblake’s earlier hull lines.
Carrying a little more displacement, deeper keel and a choice of masthead or fractional rig the GK 24 has increased headroom with a shallow – almost flush deck house with small rakish windows replacing the six scuttles that were fitted in the topsides of her predecessor.
