Friedrich-Karl Erdmann contacted Laurent Giles early in 1995. This was eight years after the newly transformed design company had increased the range of construction choices to include both strip plank and welded steel.
Initially Friedrich selected the steel version (which would be ballasted internally with cast iron), the popular two spreader slutter rig, and long doghouse which is offered as standard on the steel version. He would outfit the yacht himself.
It transpired that the construction contract with Otto Knenemund was signed in September 1995 and work commenced. The yard followed Barry van Geffen’s hand drawn steel construction plan precisely except that they substituted Lloyds grade A – B.S.43-C steel with 5083 Aluminium. But no great harm done; although the aluminium structure is considerably lighter than the specified steel changes to displacement, the centre of gravity and stability have been compensated by the adjustments to the ballast, a the addition of teak laid deck.
Latterly the Laurent Giles Archive has developed plans drawn up specifically for aluminium construction and these are now offered as a full package based on the Vertue Mk II hull with long doghouse and slutter rig.

New for 2020 the third edition study notes including the new aluminium Vertue Mk II: 34 page A4 format colour booklet containing many small scale drawings and photographs as well as technical data and an abridged specifications of Andrillot and the various Vertue types. Construction scantlings of the carvel, strip plank & steel or aluminium versions are outlined as are the variant deck arrangements, accommodation layouts and rigs.
Included are generic drawing lists for each of the alternative designs and information for clients considering building a new Vertue.

A replica of Luana can be constructed in aluminium from the drawings which will be supplied, or if preferred using strip plank construction, please specify when ordering. In both cases full construction, rigging and outfit drawings will be provided.
