In 1934, Philip Sharp of Poole of Dorset bought Dr Shears Lymington L-Class Yacht Lotus and renamed her Sally. Two years later he asked Laurent Giles to draw him his ‘Proposal No 24’, a slightly larger 5 tonner for his personal use in Poole harbour and the Solent. The resulting six design drawings that he produced in 1937 for this 25’ cutter were to become the starting point for the phenomenal Vertue class and included two sail plan versions – with and without a bowsprit.

She was based on the hull lines of Andrillot with the same overall dimensions but with changes to the frame spacing and ballast keel; Giles drew the 4490 lbs of lead 60 lbs lighter than that of Andrillot’s larger iron casting
