This is the first Vertue rigged as a bermudan cutter and with aluminium spars ~ the sail plan and deck layout being prepared for the client who had become interested in the Vertue after visiting the office on Quay Hill in February 1973. Unlike the earlier gaff cutters she had her masthead stay set back at the stem head and fore stay at the coach roof, her coach roof arrangement being the extended ocean cruising version.
Having received the package of drawings this client had asked if the beam could be increased, but the Partners successfully dissuaded him on the grounds that they have a fairly high ballast ratio and were already a well proven design which had built up a considerable reputation, but to increase beam would also increase weather helm. There ensued some discussion as to how they might change the design if they were to undertake a total redesign.
During construction her sheer line was raised by one inch and the Coach roof was raised by an equal amount to bring standing headroom to 5’ 11”, this was thought not to have any detrimental effect on appearance.
